Students call for independent probe on Batasan blast
Blast only serves Malacanang

Members of youth group League of Filipino Students held an indignation rally at the University of the Philippines today to call for justice to the victims in the explosion at the Batasan Complex that killed three people, including Basilan Rep. Wahan Akbar, and wounded eight others, two of them also lawmakers.
The youth group called for an independent investigation on the blast, saying that a PNP probe alone will not be sufficient to reveal the truth behind the explosion.
“No one got satisfied with the way the PNP handled the investigations on the Glorietta probe, and we doubt if they can do better on this [Batasan] one,” said Vencer Crisosomo, national chairperson of the LFS.
He added that Malacanang may be a suspect in the blast, and that they question the PNP’s credibility to investigate the blast.
“This is indeed a terrorist act, and the only one who can benefit from this is the country’s biggest terrorist organization, is Malacanang. First, it is meant to divert public attention from the cash gifts and bribery scandal and the impeachment case against Mrs. Arroyo,” said Crisostomo.
“Second, as has been pointed out in the Glorietta Blast, this may be used to scare the public, create mass hysteria and panic against ‘terrorism’ and justify the use of emergency powers, possible even declare Martial Law,” said Crisostomo.
The youth leader explained that a desperate and isolated administration like Arroyo’s is capable of doing such acts in order to maintain power.
“Instead of ‘destabilizing the government’ as such acts are described by defenders of the administration, they may actually be used by the administration to save itself from the growing public unrest that came as a result of recent, successive scandals that involved the first family,” said Crisostomo.
Meanwhile, the youth group also called on the students and the people to be vigilant in monitoring the developments on the investigation. ###
