Students join anti-Arroyo protests

Continues call for people power
Students join anti-Arroyo protest today

Press Release
February 15, 2008

In the first big anti-Arroyo rally after the testimonies of ZTE scam star witness Rodolfo “jun” Lozada Jr., the League of Filipino Students (LFS) led hundreds of students to join other political forces to call for the ouster of the “first family mafia.”

LFS chapters from various high schools, colleges and universities in Metro Manila led their school mates to attend today’s rally, calling for the youth to “show their disgust to a rotten regime.”

According to Vencer Crisostomo, national chairperson of the LFS, “in the past few days, we have been doing room-to-room discussions and teach-ins in our campuses. Our members have been forwarding e-mails and text messages to get the youth in the streets today.”

Crisostomo said that recent events involving former allies of the first family and the subsequent public outrage that resulted from their testimonies may be the start of Arroyo’s downfall.

“The speech of former house speaker Jose de Venecia and the testimony of Lozada shows that for seven years, the Philippine government has been run by the Arroyo’s like a mafia madly lining their pockets with ill-gotten wealth,” said Crisostomo.

“And to complete the mafia image, they kill or kidnap anyone who can implicate them in their crimes, as what had happened to Lozada,” added Crisostomo.

The LFS, a convenor of YOUTH REVOLT, said they are planning on a nationwide student protest to intensify the youth’s call for the ouster of Arroyo.

YOUTH REVOLT is a broad alliance of student organizations, youth formations and student councils to consolidate the youth’s efforts to remove the Arroyo’s from power.
