Youth-led Liwasan rally scoffs at staged GMA ‘unity walk’
United youth nationwide real ‘unity in prayer and action’ – YOUTH ACT NOW!
YOUTH ACT NOW! (Youth for Accountability and Truth Now!) today scoffed at Malacanang’s staged ‘unity walk’ with youth and students yesterday, saying that today’s youth-led rally is the genuine ‘youth unity in prayer and action’.
“Youth and students came here of their own volition despite sabotage attempts, black propaganda and other threats. This is the real unity walk of the youth, led by the youth, for the youth and not just for self-serving photo opportunities,” said Youth Act now! Spokesperson Alvin Peters.
“Today is an overwhelming convergence of different school spirits with a united cheer for truth, accountability and meaningful change,” said Peters.
Students from Ateneo, La Salle, UP, UST, UE, FEU, Adamson, San Beda, St. Scholastica, College of St. Benilde, St. Paul’s, UA&P, Assumption, PUP, PCU, PNU and high school students participated in the action.
The young participants assembled in two points – Kalaw, Taft and UST, Espana before marching towards Liwasang Bonifacio.
They mocked Malacanang’s ‘unity walk’, marching by the hundreds per point bearing placards with Arroyo’s face labeled as ‘Certified Evil’.
Students from the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P), meanwhile, went to the rally via motorcade.
Nationwide, not just in ‘imperial Manila’
Elsewhere, youth and students led by YOUTH ACT NOW! regional and provincial formations also held their own protest actions.
In Luzon, they converged in Baguio, Vigan, Cavite, San Pedro, Laguna, Los Banos, Naga and Legazpi City.
In Visayas, YOUTH ACT NOW! members organized protest actions in Bacolod, Iloilo and Cebu City.
In Mindanao, similar actions were held in Cagayan de Oro and Davao City.
“Our nationwide formations make it smoother and easier for students to carry on with the fight this summer, even when they go home to their provinces. We plan to set up ‘Summer Camps’ nationwide to launch educational fora, actions and consolidation of our ranks. This fight is really far from over,” Peters said. ###
